ONYEKACHI "MEZZY" AKALONU | ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Onyekachi “Mezzy” Akalonu, Kachi for short, is a multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of language, culture, and visual expression. His creative world spans graphic design, fine art, fashion, writing, modeling, and hosting, all driven by a belief that creativity isn’t meant to live in one lane. From his web show Kickin' It With Kachi to visual art and apparel design, Kachi treats expression as something fluid, interconnected, and constantly evolving.

Raised in the Bronx and shaped by his Nigerian heritage, Kachi draws deeply from hip-hop culture, African storytelling traditions, and a lifelong relationship with language. Growing up around graffiti, poetry, fashion, and music taught him that art could be political, communal, and expressive all at once. Those influences continue to inform work that blends bold visuals with narrative depth and cultural commentary.

Kachi balances freelance freedom with purpose-driven work, seeking projects that feed both his creativity and his soul. His art often challenges viewers, addressing themes of identity, social justice, and equity without softening the message. He believes meaningful conversations require impact, not comfort.

What’s next: Kachi will host the Black Student Union UVM Fashion Show on February 28, continue expanding Kickin’ It With Kachi, return to fine art through painting and oil pastels, and launch a Substack featuring new writing and short stories. His comic “Fight Fire with Spray Cans” is available through DC Comics on Amazon, Apple Books, and online book retailers.

At every turn, Kachi’s work invites people to see themselves, question the world, and stay open to expression in all its forms.
